3Inexpensive grill, not cheap
By MIKE LAM
I have mixed feelings about this product. I used it for a small company barbeque and it did the job well. I was able to grill up hot dogs, hamburgers, ribs, and corn. The grill lit up quickly and lasted about an hour and a half, as advertised. Sounds like a pretty positive review, right? Here's where things went wrong: the aluminum pan holding the coals is rather thin and flimsy and the legs holding the pan up does not even raise the pan up any at all. This is a huge problem because not only does the bottom of the pan get extremely hot; the intensity of the heat transfers to the legs and burns anything it is resting on. I used the grill on top of a park bench and the table was burned nearly catching on fire from the extreme heat from the pan's bottom and legs. The park ranger came around, noticed the grill burning the table, and handed me a citation. I am waiting for the court date to find out my fine amount. If you do use this grill, please use caution and make sure it is sitting on top of something that won't burn or it might burn through your pocketbook.

4Tailgaiting grill
By Troy M
Good grill for tailgaiting when you want that charcoal taste. I used it for some steaks last weekend, and it worked well. The only problem is that you cannot add additional charcoal, but as it turns out, I didn't need to, there is plenty in the grill.

5Good Disposable Grill
By M. Patel
Works as advertised. Coals light easily, last for over an hour, and it is large enough to fit 6 burgers on it.Remember to follow instructions, shake the grill to break up the charcoal before lighting. When they ship the grill the stand is upside down, so it cradles the grill, remember to flip it over so the grill is a few inches off the ground, it does not mention this in the instructions.

5Wow.
By Coug Moog
This is the only way to cook.My last grill was a Sunshine Legend with cast iron everything. If you spend the time seasoning the grates and plates, it cooks well. But it takes so damn much time it's not worth it to me.So when I installed a gas line for the grill, I went with the best. This thing flat out smokes the competition. Hot, Hot, Hot, and even heat. fast warmup. I can smoke meats in it. Rotisserie roasts and fowl (or a pineapple--do try that).Cleanup is a snap and this thing is sooo solid. I looked at Viking and Napoleon grills as well. This one is the best built, in my opinion. Easy to keep clean and ready to cook. That's what you want, isn't it?UPDATE May 2011:Well here we are beginning this grill's fifth season, and the ceramic flame tamer rods were all replaced last year. If you like your steaks medium rare over a flame hotter than the fires of hell like I do, you'll "powderize" your DCS flame tamers too. So far I have replaced:1) Flame tamer rods2) an igniter button assembly that got water in it and corroded3) the cover. That's it, folks. The rest of the item is as solid as day one, and still easy to keep clean. I have to do a minor teardown at the end of each summer for deep cleaning (you can't get all the grease out when any grill is fully assembled), but DCS makes this fairly straightforward. If you can handle the need to periodically replace the ceramic rods in your grill, DCS might make you happy. Before this, I was replacing the entire grill every 3 seasons or so. I can imagine this one still performing like a champ fifteen years from now. So if you have the money to spend, thick stainless and thoughtful design will get you a grill that will easily outlast the cheapies out there. I've seen a few of these in the used market for insane discount prices, considering the small effort it takes to get them into fighting form. I considered buying one I saw on Craigslist and setting it up for my brother. He said he was happy with his Weber kettle, which I respect because that thing is a monster as well when you know how to use it.I've found a good wide range of temperature control and an acceptable spread of cool and hot spots. Nothing wrong with a cool spot on your grill--you need that to move food when it needs to go from sear to gentler heat. As long as you know where the cool spots are you can use them in your cooking. The infrared rotisserie burner can get very hot, so watch it when you set up a bird in there. I've found I can put applewood or hickory chips in the smoke drawer along with a crumbled-up Kingsford briquette, leave the heat on only by the chip drawer, and get fine smoking results on the other end of the grill. You have to exercise discipline here--don't open the lid. Just plug a digital thermometer into your brisket and watch the thermometer on the unit to keep it under 215, and when your brisket comes up to temp you are ready. You can replenish chips without opening the cover. If you get this baby, word of advice: USE IT! It does no good to have an awesome grill capable of making superior food, then not making the food with it. See pineapples on sale? Get 'em and roast 'em on a spit. Flavor your whipping cream with a dash of vanilla and a sprinkle of cinnamon before you whip it, and then top your roasted pineapple wedges with your cinnamon whipped cream, some blueberries or sliced strawberries, and finish it with a drizzle of Tupelo or sourwood honey. Heaven. After this many years of service, I've gotten to know my DCS parts guy pretty well, and plan on continuing that business relationship. So much easier to service the grill at the beginning of the spring season than getting rid of the old one and setting up a new one every three years.Find a grill you are happy with that will last, if you are into grilling.

1Do not purchase
By Summertime
Upon unpacking the legs did not fit due to the collars being smashed during shipment. This was not a big deal and was easy fixed. Then I started assembling the grill and noticed that the handle was not level with the grill. Once assembled it was about a half inch out of level. The front meat shelve on the outside of the grill hung down about two inches out of level and would not hold a tray of food without it sliding off. Last but not least the top grill in the burner box would not sit level. The last three items could not be fixed without the use of some cutting tools and a welder. I thought for a second that I should fix it and move on. I later decided to just send it back.

5Best Small Offset Smoker/Grill Out There!
By Rad
If you seek a small smoker grill that approaches performance of pro-quality backyard offsets, this is the one.I've been through the small Char Broil and the Master Built before finding the Medina River Outdoors 65, and the performance difference is amazing. When outside temperatures dropped below 60, I couldn't maintain even a modest 220 degrees with the other cookers. This Medina has already performed down to 43 outside and looks like it'll hold cooking temps well into the 30s.The difference is 14-gauge steel that's 25% thicker than 16-gauge found on most offsets. Other difference is the pro-quality design of a cooking chamber lid that fits tightly atop the barrel cut-out rather than a loose and leaky lid that's the entire top half of many other offsets. Chimney and thermometer placement also superbly follow top-line cooker design as do the firebox door and damper setup.Construction and assembly materials are heavy duty throughout with quarter-inch bolts holding it together that are twice the size found on others. Fit is a bit less than top-line precise but very adequate and as good as or better than I was concerned it might be.For those expecting a lot of modifying with an offset, the only I found needed for this one are those recommended for any offset - like fabricating a charcoal basket to extend fire efficiency cooking time and to prevent coal burn-through contact with the firebox, and fabricating a firebox to cooking chamber deflector to shield food from hot coal "grill charring" while better evening out heat distribution across the cooking area. I did some minor high-temp silicone sealing around the thermometer mounting sleeve and the chimney where it attaches to the box, though this cooker tightness likely made any additional sealing unnecessary. A nice surprise was finding this the only offset I've owned with optimum spacing between fuel and cooking grates for grilling. So far, I've slow barbecued some back ribs at 220 degrees and was quite impressed that a 5-pound loading of charcoal briquettes lasted the entire burn - with plenty to spare at the end. I fully expect low and slow smoking to be as hassle-free as a top-line backyard offset - something I've never found or expected with any lower price offset, no matter how much modified.Patio space needed for this offset is a mere 24"x40" including wheel and front shelf space - a nice design from sturdy legs angled just slightly out from attachment to the barrel. Other nice touch is a rail system for the cooking grates to conveniently rest on and a grease bucket sized perfectly for a standard soup can to throw away instead of having to scrape and scrub the bucket. The small size of this cooker isn't without tradeoffs. With all its excellent qualities, it is very small for an offset. The firebox measures 12"x12" so you won't be throwing many logs in there, the cooking chamber is 12"x24" which makes for a limited guest list, and height from the cooking grates to the lid top is just 6-1/2" which does eliminate smoking a whole turkey. Cooking chamber grate area is comparable though to an 18.5" kettle grill (4 steaks - 8 burgers) and addition of the firebox when grilling takes it just over a 22.5" kettle grill capacity (6 steaks - 12 burgers).I don't know how well the efficiency of this 14-gauge package translates to larger 14-gauge offsets. 14-gauge is way better than 16-gauge in this size range, though one might assume physics could cause larger 14-gauge cookers to begin performing more like the 16-gauge small models here. Getting the performance of this one in a large size might mean going for the 1/4" steel of a "big boy" backyard offset, though that's for someone else's review.A final thought on this cooker is price. Shortly after I ordered mine, the price jumped $95 (40%) and the new price might well have kept me from buying. Knowing now that it performs near those costing about 3 times as much does seem to keep this Medina within an acceptable value range at the higher price as well, assuming there's comfort with its cooking capacity.Update - I see the price has dropped to what I originally paid for it, bringing this smoker back to the great value it was when I bought it.Second Update - Looks like the price jumped back up again. I paid around $250 with free shipping. Still love the smoker!

5Medina River #65 Smoker
By Brucebeerbeer
Received this smoker is good order. Each part was individually wrapped in paper then, wrapped again with bubble pack and placed within the smoker body for even more protection! The exterior shipping container was 1/4" corregated and seemed bullet-proof.Took about an hour to put together. All parts accounted for. Everything fit. If you can turn a 7/16" bolt you can assemble it easily because that's most of what you use. Unit is 14-gauge steel, weighs 106 pounds and will probably outlast me. (I'm 60.)Never had a smoker before. Bought Medina River because it is made of steel...all of it including the grates. Normally, I'm a scrooge but decided to treat myself and spend a little extra. Glad I did!

5Weber Summit: The best they got
By neurotome
I've owned a Weber Summit S-470, plumbed for natural gas, for about 2 months - my first gas grill. Grilling is easier and more delicious than I ever imagined. I did a lot of research before I bought it, so here is what you need to know if you're new to gas grills, new to Weber, or new to the Summit line:1) Weber sells most of the gas grills sold in America. Their customer service is legendary. Go hit up their website and look at their warranty info. 25 years, no questions asked replacements on some parts, like the grill hood; 2 years replacement even on high wear items like the burners. There are people grilling away happily on 30 year old Weber gas grills without any problems; so definitely take into account that the warranty and customer service is part of what you're paying for.2) The S-470 is mostly stainless steel. There is stainless and stainless; to keep their pricepoint, in 2008 Weber switched from grade 304 stainless to grade 420. People in demanding environments (humidity, etc) find that the 420 doesn't hold up quite as well to the elements. You can buy a lower-end, yet feature-identical grill for a similar price in the 'enameled' (E-XXX) series; but when they rust out, you'll need to replace the panel. I think my grill looks great and has held up great so far; time will tell.3) The grill grates are thick 9.5 mm stainless steel rods. They can be scoured with a brass bristle brush with no fear of damage. The thicker the grate, the more heat transfer into your steak- that is how you get a good sear. These are as thick as they come.4) The S-470 has a LOT of burner for the cooking area. If you fire up all 4 main burners, the sear burner, the IR burner and the smoker burner, you're putting nearly 70,000 BTU under the hood. The grill will go over 800 degrees on a hot day. That's the other way you get a good sear.5) The non-IR Weber sear station is just an extra 10,600 BTU burner, sandwiched in between main burners number 2 and 3. It heats up that small middle part of the grill, way hotter than it otherwise would have gotten. Then, when you put your steak down, you get a good sear. There are infrared (IR) sear stations out there in other brands, but they take up a lot of room on the grill grates - space you can't use when you're not searing. (For IR only grills, you should know about TEC - they have a neat patent, no one else's IR works the way theirs does - but now we're talking very expensive equipment that only does one thing, sear with IR, and costs even more than the Summit.) The Weber sear station is great for me - you can even sear a whole salmon fillet and it won't stick or fall apart, which I really didn't believe until I tried it.6) The IR roto burner is something I would not have known to ask for, but now I don't know how I lived without it. It makes the juiciest chicken, with the most delicious skin, that you can ever possibly imagine. In my house it is agreed that the "roto bird" is the best feature of this grill, hands down. A 5 lb bird spins to done in 45-60 minutes.7) The smoker box is sort of difficult to get good results with and the smoke dirties up the grill. If you want to smoke food low and slow, and you're thinking this grill is going to be just as good as a dedicated smoker unit, you'll be disappointed. If, on the other hand, you want your meats to have just a hint of wood smoke flavor, so they taste like they came off a high-temperature charcoal grill, you can make that happen.8) Weber makes 3 lower end grill models: the Genesis, the Spirit, and the Ducane Affinity series (branded under the Ducane name, obviously). A sear unit and a non-IR rotisserie unit are planned for the Genesis EP-330 series in 2011, so you are getting close to the S-470 feature set. The only diff between the Spirit and the Ducane (besides price) is that the Ducane is wholly fabbed in China, whereas some assembly of the Spirit is done in the USA.9) If you're completely new to gas grilling, you will need to first decide on propane versus natural gas. This review is for the natural gas model. You need a gas 'stub' out of your house to use natural gas, and if you don't know what I mean, you probably also need pro installation to avoid blowing yourself up. Propane is easier to startup but far costlier over time, and you need to always keep an extra propane bottle around and constantly schlep your empties back to Wal-Mart. An NG grill will actually save you a little money if you use A/C, as you won't be heating the kitchen (and then cooling it again) for your cooks. Won't be getting steak grease on the inside of your kitchen windows either.10) Kebabs, squabs, game hens, whole chickens, lamb, suckling pig, pork butt, pork loin, and any kind of beef or sausage - burgers, dogs, brats, Polish, whatever - it's all good on the grill. Did I mention fresh corn on the cob?! For your vegan friends: skewers of eggplant, mushrooms, peppers, onions, squash, zucc, and whatever else is garden-fresh will soon become smash hits. Seriously. My buddy actually looked happy to be vegetarian when I served him his plate; he's trying to lose weight, poor soul. A lot of people grill flatbread pizza too; I can't eat wheat so I haven't gone there.11) Lotta books about grilling out there. Bobby Flay, who is grill crazy, has written like a dozen and I have a few; they're full of good ideas. You won't go wrong at any of his restaurants either. I ran into the guy eating at B+B in Vegas not long ago and sent him a nice bottle of wine to thank him. He's great.12) Gotta clean your grill. Weber makes a 3 or 4 piece utensil kit as do many others. You need a brass brush, long tongs, and a big spatula. I never use the two-tined grill fork. A wide putty knife also helps for scraping crud out of the drip pan; potholders, heat resistant mitts, and an apron are also useful. In case it wasn't obvious, this grill is one of the best things ever to happen to me in my eating life. I can't recommend it highly enough. I have no regrets. Whatever you do after reading this review, make sure you go get yourself a gas grill. If you can't afford the new one you want, it's easy to refurb an old Craigslist grill with a little help from Weber customer service - the warranty comes with the grill. So pretty much you gotta get one!

5Weber Summit S 470: Thunder-Grill!
By Redneck Man
Weber Summit S-470. Whether a propane model or natural gas, if you're not REALLY into serious grilling, this unit may be a bit over your head. If you *are*, you'll not find a better grill on Planet Earth! This bad-boy has it all: Four MEGA-BTU "main" burners, a center sear-station burner, a smoker box burner and a dedicated IR rotisserie burner. Oh yeah, and a ultra-high power side burner, too.Your charcoal-grilling buddies tease you because you can't get that nasty charcoal lighter (carcinogen!) "taste" with a gas grill? Ha! You can now - and go 'em one better! Use the smoker box and any number of REAL wood chips and you get the taste and odor of apple, alderwood, hickory, mesquite, oak or cherry w/o the CHT chemical dangers! It's simply incredible! Yeah, it ain't a "hardware-store el-cheapo" either so spend the cash and you're getting a GENUINE Weber-built grill to last - no joke - a life-time. Check out everyone else's warranty and you'll jump on the Weber wagon - if you haven't already.Weber **IS** quality grilling. Period. You can spend more, you can buy bigger - but ya can't buy better.Feeding more people than this rather large grill can handle - with EASE? The Summit S-670 is the King-Kong big-brother of the S-470. If you can't cook on either of these two grills, then just give up, sport - and run on down to Burger King!

5Step up to real grilling
By r3itisMD
Old propane unit died and it was time to move up to a much larger cook surface with much more heat and the rotisserie unit. WOW. Made a 14 lb smoked rotisserie turkey one weekend and a Lamb leg the next, as well as steaks, shish kabobs and burgers during the week. Outstanding control of heat! The side burner is maybe too hot, but i think it has to be so the flame won't blow out in the wind. I had to keep the baked bean pot partway off the burner to control the high heat. Also had to adjust my shish kabob technique and use a wooden handled utensil to keep the lid partway open for kabob skewers to be out of direct heat...not a big deal...I could have put handles in as well and used a mitt. Only concern has been with rain... read a report on internet about rain getting into grill/grease catcher and causing a huge mess .. so I'm been keeping cover on once cooled. I would buy this unit again in the future!
