I REALLY LIKE THIS GRILL. GREAT PRODUCT & SERVICE!
By Richard Fisher
When my grill arrived by truck I was a little intimidated by the two heavy duty looking cardboard boxes sitting on top of a wooden pallet. My first reaction was "Wow, what have I got myself into". However, once I opened the boxes and viewed the quality of the packaging I was impressed and the intimidation factor disappeared. The first box contained the 4 panels of the grill's pedestal base, the two side shelves for the grill and the assembly hardware/instructions. The second box contained the grill which is fully assembled at the factory. Both boxes were packaged with great care. Each stainless steel panel of the grill's base were individually wrapped with plastic sheeting and separated by a heavy duty cardboard liners and spacers to insure damage free delivery. The same applied to the box containing the grill. This is the best factory packaged product I've encountered. 1st class packaging for both the grill and pedestal base and Made in America! After opening the two boxes and removing the parts I immediately knew that this is not an ordinary grill like you'll find at the local home warehouse or box store. It is seriously heavy duty and a precision high quality product made entirely of commercial grade 304 stainless steel including the pedestal base (according to the enclosed literature commercial grade 304 SS will not rust). After viewing this grill and its parts I'm sure this one will last for a very long time. Good stuff here! The assembly instructions could have been reproduced better but I was able to download the instructions from the Solaire website so this was not a problem (I prefer larger print without age disclosure). All fasteners supplied with the grill are stainless steel and each fastener bag is clearly marked with the corresponding part numbers on the assembly instruction sheet so it's easy to figure out where each bolt or screw is used. Tip: Install the SS washers and lock washers on the bolts/screws before you begin the assembly. That way you won't be fumbling for washers while you are trying to assemble the three panels.Assembly was quite easy (I decided to actually read the instructions instead of my usual "I can figure it out by myself" approach). Fully armed with fresh grill assembly knowledge, I installed the four casters for the pedestal base. These casters are seriously industrial grade and held in place by 4 SS bolts per caster. Next...the three pedestal base panels which were easy to connect as the nuts are press fastened into the panels. This means you don't have to use one hand to hold a backside nut while trying to thread in a screw or bolt while simultaneously trying to hold up a panel (yes you can assemble this with two arms and three arms are not required). This is a high quality touch and makes it easy to assemble the base and grill by yourself (although you'll need a second person to place the grill onto its base). The grill itself is pre-assembled at the factory so once it is placed on the base it just takes four screws and it's on. The only thing left to do is bolt on the two side shelves which are "lift to drop down" style. It took me about an hour to assemble the entire grill by myself using a single drive socket and a Phillips screwdriver. Easy well engineered stuff but forget about using a crescent wrench as shown in the instructions...use a 7/16 drive socket as it's much easier and quicker!I really like the Solaire grill's infrared burner system. I like to grill year round and the infrared system will allow me to grill even when the temperature drops. Most grills require 15+ minutes to warm up but this grill is ready to go in just 3 minutes. The best part is grilling steaks or any meat. The Infrared burner does not flare-up easily like conventional burners. You put on a steak and the intense heat quickly sears the steak sealing in the natural juices. It's different but a better way to grill without losing the natural flavor of what's on the grill. This is a very flexible grill and can be easily converted to a combo infrared/convection grill by removing one infrared burner and adding a convection burner. I decided to do this because I like to grill things like hot dogs and burgers on a convection grill so I ordered the kit to do the conversion. I spoke with "Rich" at Solaire who was terrific. I explained to him that my grill is located at my fishing camp and I would like to have the kit shipped `today' so I can receive it before I returned to my camp next week. He explained to me that they would have to assemble the kit but they could ship tomorrow. Later that afternoon he called me and told me he would ship the kit the same day. Now that's what I call great personal service. This flexibility and the fact that I can call Solaire and actually speak with a support person in a matter of seconds are rare today. Yep, I'm happy with my purchase and being an Ex-Navy guy I like supporting American companies building products in America. After all it is our country.update 11/16/2012: After using this grill for a few months I like it even better. This grill never flames up like traditional gas grills. Every steak I cook on it turns out absolutely perfect. I start with the infrared burner to sear the steak and then move to the convection burner to finish. Beautiful perfect steaks everytime. I highly recommend buying the combo(or intravection) grill as it gives you more cooking options.
